The purpose of this excavation is part of a research project to locate the remains of the earliest residence of John and Elizabeth Macarthur.

The Department of Agriculture ( now Department of Primary Industries) purchased the property in 1984, establishing the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute and conserving Belgenny Farm.

The Belgenny Farm trust now seeks to include the site of the "small miserable hut" (c.1805-1810), the first Macarthur residence on the property, into their current education and community program. The site was assessed and planned in 2006-2007 and an excavation permit for test-excavation has been obtained.
